**(includes CE, GOTY editions, bundles, etc. but not those bundled with hardware)
On the handheld side of things we don’t have a whole lot. In the third spot we have Lego Star Wars III: The Clone Wars. The game, obviously, includes all platforms that the game was released for, including 3DS. Michael Jackson The Experience took the eight spot on the list, having both a DS and PSP version. Unsurprisingly, the only handheld-exclusive title is Pokemon White, which made the list at number nine. The Pokemon series still remains a gold mine for Nintendo even all these years later. Finally, NBA 2K11 was able to squeeze into the last spot at 190,000 units, which had a PSP version.
Hardware sales are where things to get interesting.
Xbox 360 – 297K (+60%) – Top Selling Console
PlayStation 3 – ~204.3K (+13%)
Nintendo 3DS – 194K
Wii – 172K (-38%)
Despite a relatively strong start with in March, the 3DS showed a disappointing second month. Selling only 194,000, Nintendo’s newest handheld is performing under the company’s expectations. It will be interesting to see what happens both at E3 and this holiday. Nintendo is going to have to prove to consumers that the 3DS is worth its hefty $249.99. I have no doubt in my mind that Nintendo will go into the holiday with that same price, and they probably won’t cut the cost until sometime in 2012 (maybe in Summer) if sales don’t pick up significantly.
I think this holiday will be a great time for the 3DS to shine. If Nintendo can get both Mario Kart and Super Mario 3DS out by the end of the year, they could have a “must have” item on their hands. As it stands now, the software situation on the 3DS is more than a little disappointing. I wrote an article on the situation here, if you would like to read my opinion on the 3DS’s software.
Thanks again to the wonderful work at NeoGAF in obtaining these numbers. NPD has made it harder and harder to obtain reliable numbers, and the people at NeoGAF work hard to get these numbers. I just post them back on here with my take on the numbers.
