3DS sells 97,000 units in May 2011

After selling 194,000 units in April, the 3DS has dropped almost 100,000 units in May. Nintendo’s 3D handheld only managed to sell 97,000 units last month. That’s a huge blow to Nintendo, but I can’t say I’m too shocked. I am surprised that the number is that low, but I’m not surprised to see a disappointing number. Nintendo really has to step it up. The system will be seeing two Mario games this holiday season, and I’m sure Nintendo is hoping that helps things. Many people seem to be calling for a price drop into the holiday season, but I’m really not sure that will happen. I smell a price drop in March 2012, though. That will be a year after the 3DS launched in North America.

The 3DS has finally sold over one million units in Japan. It has been a difficult fight for Nintendo, with the PSP selling way more than the new handheld week after week.

Japanese Sales: 3DS still low, PSP still dominant

If you thought the 3DS situation would some how magically fix itself this past week in Japan, I’ve got some bad news for you. The 3DS  continues its fall in hardware units sold. Unsurprisingly, PSP remains at the top of hardware sales.

Software sales are slightly better for Nintendo’s handhelds. Still at the top spot is Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 2 Professional for DS, and debuting in third place is Steel Diver for the 3DS. PSP took all spots 4-8, with Haruhi Suzumiya no Tsuisou debuting in fourth place.

Nintendo releases April sales for DS, Pokemon LTD sales

Yesterday we learned how many 3DS units Nintendo sold in the month of April. Nintendo has now revealed how many DS systems they sold in April, and it beats the 3DS by about 60,000 units.

Nintendo sold 257,000 DS units in April 2011. Compare that to the 257,000 units they sold for 3DS, and you can see that tens of thousands of people aren’t ready to switch to the 3DS quite yet.

There are multiple reasons why I think the DS is out outselling the 3DS. The first is the lack of compelling software on the 3D handheld, which I talk about in more detail here. Second, is the price. The DS is of course a last gen handheld so the price is much less than the 3DS, but the 3DS also has a very high price for a handheld. It was always going to be hard to get consumers to buy a $249.99 handheld. Finally, I think that Nintendo needs to differentiate the 3DS from the DS. The two system are two closely related that parents and other consumers believe that the 3DS is just a DS with 3D, and not an evolution of the DS.

Nintendo also clued us in on how many units Pokemon Black/White have sold combined in their lifetime. The two games have sold a total of over 2.8 million units, a very impressive number for such a long-running series.
